TOEFL READING STRATEGIES:

TOEFL reading strategies and tips

Hello, today I'm going to describe the strategies of TOEFL ibt. It's an easy exam. If you practice regularly, you will do well. A lot of people give IELTS but I recommend everyone to give TOEFL ibt because it will improve your language skill properly. You should practice TOEFL IBT in this website https://toefl.kmf.com/mock. Before starting just translate it into English. You will have about 48 Toefl sample tests on it for free. Remember to read the strategies before practicing otherwise you will not know how you can improve your skill.

TOEFL Reading:
The first part is the reading section. Don't be scared. It's an easy section if you follow the strategies.

  1. First of all, do not read too much. You just need to skim.
  2. Do not read everything in the passage. Just read the line in which your question is related.
  3.  Find the keyword in the passage which your question is showing. (e.g  What did the author say about modern painting. Find the word Modern Painting in your context.
  4. There are about 9-10 detail questions. Now how can you identify which ones are detail questions? Answer:  The detail questions always start with According + WH questions. For these questions, you will find your answer in the keyword sentence directly. If you do not find your answer in the keyword sentence that means the question is a little bit hard. Don't be nervous. Just look the sentence before keyword sentence and after the keyword sentence. You will find your answer.
  5. Try to understand the similarity between the keyword sentence and the keyword in the question.
  6. Increase your vocabulary. Don't memorize every word. Learn the synonym only.
  7.  In the vocabulary questions if you don't know the meaning, try to fit the words which are given with the sentence. Eliminate those which are useless. Then just make an educated guess.
  8. For purpose questions, you need to read the selected the paragraph clearly and summarize it on your mind. Then read the question. Purpose questions start with "why or what".
  9. There are some questions which have 2-3 answers. These questions start with "Which of the following is not true" ( as an example ). In this case just read the answer choices first. Then go to the context. See which is not in the passage. Eliminate that point and fill the other points.
  10. There are some questions in which there will be a line from the passage saying what did the line mean?  You have to read only the line in the passage. Try to find the similarity with the answer choices. Be careful these questions are a little bit tricky. Read every answer choice properly.
  11.  Summary questions: These questions are easy. Read the prompt clearly. If you have answered correctly the previous questions. You will have a brief idea of the passage. You will understand which are the answers easily.  Do not read the whole passage for it.

Remember you have to practice every day. You should practice everything on the computer. A lot of people practice the books. It's a bad habit because the original questions will come on the computer and you need to adjust the computer-based process. Otherwise, you will get nervous on the examination day.
