SAT prep

Nowadays SAT-1 has become optional for many universities. A lot of universities in the USA do not require SAT. If you are surprised just go to this link http://www.fairtest.org/university/optional. See for yourself. You will find about 900+ universities here. Some people give ACT instead of SAT. ACT is easier than SAT. ACT has more geometric part than SAT exam which is very helpful to the people who like geometry. If you do well on ACT you can have scholarship like SAT.

SAT structure: For the people who want to give SAT:

Total time: 3 hours and 50 minutes for SAT with an optional essay. If you want to give SAT without the optional essay, the time is 3 hours. There are 3 sections on the NEW SAT
  1. Critical reading + writing marks 200-800. Reading section is for 65 minutes which has five passages. Each passage has about 11-12 questions. 3  individual passages and 1 pair of passages. The total number of question is 52. Writing section is only for 35 minutes which has 4 passages. Each passage has 10-11 questions.
  2. Math section:  It is easier than reading section . 2 parts: Without a calculator: 25 minutes 20 questions. With calculator: 55 minutes 38 questions.
  3. Optional essay: It is your wish you want to give it or not. The proctor will give you an essay book in the examination and a paper for writing. Don't write in the essay book. You can only write your essay template on that essay book. Total marks 24.
It is a good news that you don't need to memorize about 3000 words for the new SAT. The system was for OLD SAT.  The words which you will find in SAT test are regular English words.
Schedule for practicing:
you have to work very hard for the SAT test. If you are weak in English reading, you should read a lot of English magazines and books. Take a dictionary with you always. Practice at least 2 passages on Princeton Review. Always maintain your time while practicing. It will be hard for the first few days but eventually, you will improve your score. Never give up. You can read reader's digest for improving your reading skill.
If you are weak in math, clear the concepts of math from Barron's book. Then practice on Princeton Review.

ACT structure:

The ACT structure will look creepy to you at the first time but it is easier than SAT. There are 4 parts and 1 optional essay.
part 1: English 75 questions in 45 minutes. It usually tests your grammar skill. (e.g  punctuation, sentence structure )
Part 2: Math: Total time is 60 minutes for 60 questions. It tests your geometric skill( trigonometry. plane co-ordinate etc). This part also has some algebra and pre-algebra.
3. Science part:40 questions in 35 minutes. This part tests your data analysis skill.
4. Reading Section: This section has 40 questions in 35 minutes.
5 One optional essay for 40 minutes.

You don't need to give any subject tests if you give ACT. If you give SAT, some universities will require SAT subject tests ( at least two).

Now it's your wish you want to give SAT or not.

Best books for practicing SAT:
  1. Princeton Review: It is the best book of all. The original SAT questions are compatible to this book's questions. Just solve the whole book properly with a schedule.
  2. Barron's: You can clear your math conceptions through this book. There are a lot of math practice tests in this book.
  3. College board's official guide: You can buy it if you want.
